Winter is the worse time for my lips and I know i’m not the only one. They get so battered by the wind and cold air. That was before I found this cute little lip balm by Maybelline.

This lip balm is definitely very moisturising and you can take it anywhere because it is so compact. On a daily basis, I use the “Antioxidant Berry” flavour. The “Berry Crush” flavour I keep for the night if I want red bold coloured lips. The red colour stains your lips a bit, so eating and drinking water is not a problem! You might want to reapply though for a even more bold colour.

The Claims

Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm

Ingredient Highlights

This product contains a lot of moisturising and hydrating ingredients (which is what a lip product should have anyway).

Though it does not plump my lips. Also, it does not look like any ingredients in this product can do this. Anyway, the main function of a lip balm is mainly based on moisturising, anything else is a bonus of course.

1. SPF products are becoming more and more popular. This is especially in Australia where the sun is always so strong and damaging. This product does contain UV filters to help protect the lips from UV rays. Having a SPF lip balm is a bonus.

2. 12 hours long lasting and hydration is always almost a standard for lip balm. With plenty emollients and occlusive oils, it help moisturise and lock it on the lips.

3. Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E), Coconut Oil and Petrolatum are good for the soothing, calming and rejuvenating the lips.

The Controversial Topic: Petrolatum

Petrolatum also known as petroleum jelly is a very common ingredient in a lot of products. Consumers perceive this a a ‘bad’ ingredient because it is derived from petroleum.

The unrefined petrolatum contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which is a carcinogen (cancer causing). But, refined petrolatum used in cosmetics is very safe.

Petrolatum is very good at protecting skin. It helps maintain moisture and enhances active delivery to the skin. So is petrolatum good or bad? I’ll leave that decision up to you.

Fragrance Allergens

Of course like many other products there are a couple of fragrance allergen ingredients. These are safe when used at a low concentration as specified in the EU regulations.

But just FYI to avoid if you are allergic to these. It can definitely plump up the lips (and not in a good way!).

Allergens: Limonene, Benzyl Benzote, Linalool and Citral.
