I picked up Redwin Sorbolene Moisturiser in attempt to ease my dry skin. What I thought was that it took at long time to spread and absorb onto my skin. A little goes a long way! I was slightly disappointed, however my skin does feel moisturised afterwards. Also I can’t complain as it does its job as a moisturiser without having the price tag.

What I do like about Sorbolene Moisturisers are that they are multi-functional. What other functions can there be?

Firstly as a makeup remover, it works very well. The mineral oil in the formula helps dissolve oils and makeup on my skin. The stearic acid helps make it water soluble, making it easier to rinse with water. It is very gentle and does not strip oils from your skin!

Secondly as a shaving cream, it glides very smoothly. It also makes my skin soft and smooth afterwards. I prefer using this sorbolene as a shaving cream rather than a moisturiser.

Sorbolene Moisturiser claims

So whats are the key ingredients in this Sorbolene Moisturiser?

1. Glycerin; a default ingredient in any skincare product. It increases moisture on the skin by absorbing water from the environment.

2. Sorbitol; a sugar complex and is pretty much the same as glycerin, a humectant.

3. Mineral Oil; an occlusive emollient, it creates a barrier on the skin to prevent water loss. Though it has a negative connotation because it is derived from petroleum. (Refined versions are very safe!). Performance wise, mineral oil is very good at doing its job. It is comparable to vegetable oils without the price tag. And no, it does not clog pores!

4. Wheat Germ Oil; the source of natural Vitamin E to help moisturise skin.

5. Stearic Acid; an emulsifier to help stabilise the formula. Also the key ingredient in dissolving makeup. It can also help with moisturising but is not the main function.

Ingredients to look out for?

The preservatives! Personally I wouldn’t use products with these preservatives if it is left on the skin. If it’s a makeup remover or shaving cream then I have no problems with these.

Imidazolidinyl Urea; decomposes to release formaldehyde (a toxic compound). Though it is safe if the formaldehyde content does not exceed 0.2%. However, for a peace of mind I would avoid this.

Chloroacetamide; is an irritant even at low concentrations (<0.3%). Hence why there is a warning label “Keep away from eyes”. (But should read “Keep away from the face”).

The Verdict?

Sorbolene moisturiser is a basic inexpensive product that is multi-functional. It is pretty much the same across all brands. It usually contains common ingredients such as Glycerin, Sorbitol, Mineral Oil and Stearic Acid.

My conclusion is better to avoid using this brand if you are using it as a moisturiser. However, it is good as a shaving cream and makeup remover (if you rinse it off!).
