Review: Mattify & Cover Your Blemishes With Rimmel BB Cream

A staple product in my makeup cabinet. A few years back I’ve discovered BB Cream to help cover up my acne scars and a few blemishes. My face is usually very oily so matte texture is what I always look for.

Firstly, coverage is great and it easily blends onto my face. However, the beige/pink tone did not really much my yellow skin tone. But I usually blend it in with a neutral shade of finishing powder.

Secondly, I did like the matte after feel, it definitely absorbs a lot of my excess oil throughout the day.

Thirdly, its SPF 15 without the greasiness! Love it!

One thing I noticed was that the product runs out of the tube when I open the cap. It also leaks when its stored on the side and when its upright. It gets quite messy once opened, and very difficult to clean when it gets onto clothes. Maybe a pump bottle would suit better for this product!

The BB Cream Verdict?

Rimmel BB Cream claims to do a lot of things. Lets see how many they tick off for me.

1. Minimises the appearance of pores. Yes! So, what ingredients does this? Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides and silicones fills in the pores to make it look smaller. FYI, anything ending with a ‘cone’ is a silicone! E.g. Cyclopentasiloxane, Phenyl Trimethicone.

2. Evens skin tone. Yes! Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides hides my blemishes (but not the right colour tone for me though).

3. Mattifies. Yes! Kaolin, Talc, Nylon-12 and Silicones absorbs oils and provides a matte texture.

4. Controls shine all day. Yes! Similar to #3, with the help of absorbants – Kaolin, Talc, Nylon-12.

5. Smoothes. Yes! You guess it. Its due to the silicones + absorbants which help smooth rough and bumpy skin texture.

6. Soothes. Maybe! Bamboo and Meadowsweet extract are known to have skin soothing properties. Though I haven’t really focused on this aspect and my face is not inflamed to notice.

7. Conceals dark circles. Yes! I don’t have any dark circles but it covers up blemishes pretty well for a BB Cream.

8. Helps prevent blemishes. Yes! Witch hazel is anti-microbial, meaning it can reduce/manage spots and dots. It also does not contain known comedogenic ingredients. These can exasperate or cause build up of oils which may lead to acne.

9. Gives all day coverage. Yes! Of course with Titanium Dioxide and Iron Oxide for covering up blemishes. And the absorbants help with the mattifying and doesn’t run off my face!

In Summary, it ticks 8/9 of the claims this BB Cream makes. Still very good!

Ingredients to keep an eye on!

Octocrylene (UV filter) . Can cause dermatitis when used in a high concentration (>10%). Sensitive skin people should definitely avoid anything that contains this ingredient.

Pentaerythrityl Tetradi- T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate (Antioxidant), aka BHT. Safe to use if below 0.8%, but many people are avoiding this altogether. Sensitive skin people be cautious.
